HEALTH AND SAFETY OFFICER [MANUFACTURING]

 

Location: Blackheath, Cape Town 

 

Our Client, based in Blackheath Cape Town, is looking for a hands-on and organised Health & Safety Officer to support health and safety compliance across their operational sites.This is a practical role suited to someone who enjoys being on the floor, working with employees and supervisors, identifying risks and making sure health and safety standards are consistently maintained.  

 

You will be responsible for coordinating day-to-day health and safety activities, maintaining compliance documentation and registers, conducting inspections, supporting training and inductions, and following up on corrective actions.
 

Responsibilities:

 

    • Maintain health and safety documentation, statutory registers and compliance records.
    • Conduct regular workplace inspections and identify hazards and areas of non-compliance.
    • Assist with risk assessments, safe work procedures and implementation of appropriate controls.
    • Monitor PPE requirements and ensure employees comply with site safety standards.
    • Coordinate safety inductions, toolbox talks and relevant employee training.
    • Maintain records relating to medical surveillance, training, inspections, equipment and incidents.
    • Assist with incident and near-miss investigations and ensure corrective actions are followed through.
    • Coordinate emergency procedures, fire drills and evacuation exercises.
    • Monitor chemical registers, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), spill kits and waste records.
    • Ensure contractors meet site health and safety requirements before commencing work.
    • Coordinate required inspections, servicing and certification of safety equipment and machinery.
    • Support Injury on Duty (IOD) administration and related documentation.
    • Work closely with management, supervisors, employees and external health and safety consultants to maintain compliance.
    • Travel between company sites when required

 

Requirements:

 

    • Grade 12 / Matric.
    • SAMTRAC or a recognised Health & Safety qualification is preferred/required.
    • Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and relevant regulations.
    • Previous experience in a Health & Safety role, preferably within manufacturing, engineering, warehousing, chemicals or a similar operational environment.
    • Experience with workplace inspections, risk assessments, safety files, incident reporting and corrective actions.
    • Good understanding of PPE, emergency procedures and general workplace safety.
    • Strong administration and record-keeping skills.
    • Good communication skills and the confidence to engage with employees and management at all levels.
    • Computer literate, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel.
    • Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel between sites.
