PRODUCTION / OPERATIONS MANAGER

Location: Durban

Our Manufacturing client is looking for an experienced Production / Operations Manager to join their team. Reporting directly to the Managing Director, the Production / Operations Manager will be actively involved in production and process management.

 

Responsibilities:

 

Production Planning

  • Maintains correct shop floor disciplines and procedures, ensures timely and accurate data input and manufacturing cost controls.
  • Convert monthly plans into weekly/daily plans - capacity planning (labour and raw materials).
  • Lead all projects and management activities within the plant.
  • Plan the use of facilities, equipment and personnel to meet current and future manufacturing requirements.
  • Ensure that production targets are met, in relation to Production Team KPIs i.e. effective time management (reduced overtime), lean manufacturing principles, effective use of manpower.

People Management

  • Manages the Production Team, including supervisors, planners, process engineers, team leaders and members.
  • Ensure effective communication throughout the production team through daily structured meetings.
  • Ensure downtime is effectively managed.
  • Monitor the production floor continuously.
  • Training and development of operations team. Ensures employees are multiskilled and succession and upskilling plans are in place. Identifies skills risks and plans training accordingly.
  • Assist with IR matters when necessary.
  • Provides feedback on rewards and recognition for the production team.

Quality & ISO Management

  • Ensures quality standards and customer standards are maintained through first off and last off checks and quality audits.
  • Implements corrective action when quality standards are compromised.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable regulations - ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.

Production Management & Continuous Improvement

  • Controls finished goods stock.
  • Maintains set level of buffer stock levels and raw materials to meet sales forecasts and orders.
  • Manages stock losses and variances.
  • Develops and evaluates programs designed to improve the manufacturing process.
  • Utilises the KANBAN and lean manufacturing systems.
  • Improves factory efficiency by means of continuous improvement.
  • Utilisation of 6s standards.
  • Ensure compliance with municipal by laws, standards and procedures.
  • Develop and maintain a safe and effective manufacturing facility.
  • Ensure processes and systems are in place and implemented to mitigate the risk of safety and heath problems.
  • Responsible for all machine and plant maintenance (planned and breakdown maintenance).
  • Ensure effective housekeeping is adhered to.

Customer Satisfaction & Business Growth

  • Manage new product handover process.
  • Ensures lead times are managed and adhered to - ensuring on time and in full delivery to customers.
  • WIP control and constraint management.
  • Maintain and improve product income levels through waste reduction, cost reduction and cost improvement plans.
  • Achieve gross profit targets in line with direct cost management.
  • Provide input into strategies for business growth and success.

 

Requirements:

 

  • Engineering Degree
  • Additional qualifications: Production Management / Operations Management / Project Management - advantageous
  • Experience in the automotive / steel fabrication / heavy manufacturing sector
  • At least 7 - 10 years experience in a similar role
  • Experience with ISO 9001and 14001
  • Experience with lean manufacturing tools and techniques.
  • Solid management experience.
